Statement in Reaction To Pending War on Iraq

March 17, 2003

WASHINGTON — United States Senator Mary Landrieu (D-La.) issued the following statement regarding a possible war with Iraq.

"I had hoped that our efforts to resolve this crisis through diplomatic means would be successful, and that the use of force would not be necessary. Saddam Hussein has been given every reasonable opportunity to comply with the United Nations, but unfortunately he has chosen not to respond to these efforts. The time for diplomacy has ended. Our tolerance and patience have worn out. Saddam Hussein must be removed from power, and it now appears inevitable that this will involve the use of force. The President has shown remarkable restraint and I support his decision to go forward in the hopes of ultimately bringing freedom and peace to the people of Iraq."
