BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Capital Area Transit System will get a federal grant to help buy new buses and other improvement projects.

CATS received the $5.2 million grant through the Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration State of Good Repair Grant Program.

"Public transportation is essential for accommodating a growing capital city," said Senator Mary Landrieu, who helped secure the funding.

"Many residents rely on the system every day for transportation to work, school, hospital visits and other essential travel. This grant will be a much needed boost for the Capital Area's bus system and help ensure that Baton Rouge and Baker residents can maintain their mobility."

The money can only be used for capital improvements and purchases.
